CCCSAA President’s Welcome
It is with excitement and enthusiasm that, on behalf of the California Community Colleges Student Affairs Association (CCCSAA), I welcome you to the start of a new fiscal year and the fall semester. Let me take this opportunity to share with each of you what the board has been working on over the summer, including goals we have identified for the year, opportunities to get involved with CCCSAA, and upcoming professional development activities.

Directly after the June CCCSAA Professional Conference, we held our board transition retreat.  This is the first opportunity we have to be in a shared space to get organized for the year ahead.  Taking into consideration priorities and needs of our membership and current issues within the California Community College system, the Board drafted goals that were approved at our July board meeting.
CCCSAA 2017-2018 Goals:

  1. Update Governing Documents
  2. Improve Communication
  3. Strengthen Statewide Involvement
  4. Provide Professional Development Opportunities for Members

We will regularly reach out to the membership to either participate in working groups or soliciting feedback through the listserv to accomplish these goals.  There are opportunities to be an active participant in advancing these goals—just reach out to any one on the board or feel free to listen-in to our conference call meetings that are held twice a month on the first and fourth Wednesday of each month.  Call in information can be obtained by contacting Nicole Moya, CCCSAA Director of Administration at Moya_Nicole@sac.edu.

We have few and meaningful occasions to be together throughout the year.  We will use these opportunities, the October 13-15, 2017 CCCSAA Student Leadership Conference as well as Fall and Spring SSCCC General Assembly, to coordinate professional development/career advancement workshops.
Enjoy the journey.

Mary Avalos
CCCSAA President

Student Leadership Conference

The CCCSAA Student Leadership Conference 2017 (SLC17) will take place October 13-15, 2017 at the San Jose Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. Your conference co-chairs are Augustine Nevarez (Hartnell College) and Ryan Shook (Gavilan College). Our goal is to provide our student leaders with opportunities to LEARN new skills, ACT upon that learning, and be ready to LEAD at the next level by the end of the conference.

To register for the conference and for conference details, visit SLC17.  Please hurry, as the hotel is booking up. Early bird registration ends September 22.

Additionally, we are looking for presenters on topics of current issues, best practices, and leadership training.  If you are interest in presenting please contact our conference chairs at anevarez@hartnell.edu and rshook@gavilan.edu

Charlottesville and the Rebirth of Dialogue

Imagine this: “We are here to request a permit to host a ‘Unite the Right’ demonstration on your campus.  We are expecting about 100 people to join our demonstration here tomorrow morning” says the visitor who has found his way to your office.  After the initial pause, you begin to consider what questions you should ask, what all should you do.

Now awaken to this: the greatest challenge of our profession today is the protection of free speech, which includes hate speech. While the media attention is no longer on the events of last August, our profession requires us to maintain awareness and prepare to facilitate safe, free speech.

CCCSAA Board of Directors wholeheartedly and emphatically condemns the violence that took place in Charlottesville on August 11 and 12, and all forms of hate.  We also understand that all speech is to be protected, particularly on a college campus, as open speech should birth dialogue and development..  As S. G. Tallentyre wrote, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”  As student affairs professionals, it is not only our duty to facilitate the peaceful expression of thought in public forums, but to also facilitate dialogue in response to what is said; to pull out of the darkness of bigotry an enlightened community that can dialogue civilly.

We invite you to share your thoughts and best practices here, as we aim to facilitate the rebirth of dialogue - please share your comments.
