Auto-Awarding Degrees: Increase Graduation Rates and Close Equity Gaps
Wednesday, March 10, 2021 | 9 a.m.
Presented by
Colleagues at Golden West College
  • Dr. Robyn Brammer, Dean of Counseling
  • Christina Ryan Rodriguez, Dean of Enrollment Services
Golden West College created a unique partnership between counseling and enrollment. The new process increased graduation rates by 500%, improved semester-to-semester retention, and brought students back to the college who had dropped out. We identified students who either finished a degree or certificate (regardless of their stated intent). We developed a tool to identify potential graduates; and we then manually certified the degrees, created a detailed student-communication plan, and minimized the auto-award impact to financial aid students. This session will help you replicate our process. We will provide best-practices for nudging students toward FAFSA completion, degree completion, retention, and re-entry.

This session will discuss how to recognize and acknowledge your own biases and how to make objective, unbiased decisions.

Resolution Writing... Learning to Teach the Process
Friday, August 7, 2020, at 10 a.m. PST
Presented by Dr. Nicky Damania, Director of Student Life at Bakersfield College
One of the most common questions I get from advisors is how to write a resolution. A resolution contains all the proposed solutions to a topic. Learning to write a resolution is very important because the goal is for the officers to share their opinions through written solutions to the problems they are trying to voice. More than that, we as advisors need to understand and develop our skills in teaching resolution writing to our officers.

This presentation will help the basic “who, what, when, where, and why” of a resolution writing. It will then show how a resolution looks like and explain how to write one. Finally, it will provide some tips to get started on writing a resolution.
